The Curious Savage

John Patrick
In 1 Samuel 16:7 the Lord tells the prophet Samuel “The Lord does not see as man sees; for a man looks at the external appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” In "The Curious Savage", we see this principle applied through pleasant and poignant portrayals by the residents at The Cloisters, a therapy group home set up to “bring people to their senses.” Their behavior, while curious, is nevertheless endearing. The Savage siblings see at The Cloisters quirky characters devoid of value. Mrs. Ethel Savage, the matriarch of this fundamentally flawed family, instead focuses on the façade behind which each character hides and perceives the purity of their hearts and the joy in their lives. We learn from The Cloisters that kindness and concern, laced with compassion, provide a far better quality of life than do the lies, greed and selfishness of Titus, Lily Belle and Samuel, savages in more than just their surname. Sometimes during the play, it’s difficult to tell who is fooling whom. But, in the end, we are reminded that reality is not always what we assume it to be. Come visit the egg shell world of the characters that live at The Cloisters and see how a loving heart and a giving spirit can work wonders!
